I have an EMG X music man pickup in a Stingray along with a Darkglass Tone Capsule. This thing will overdrive all by itself! It's thunderous with the bass knob

Switch to gain channel. Turn your treble all the way up. Turn the bass all the way up. Turn the midrange all the way down. The PA2 is a gain-booster, Why use it for a clean tone,? You now have instant hard-ass tone, If you have a coil-splitter, all the better, as the heaviest tone will come from a single--coil at the bridge.

Have this guitar - just wish it didn't have the gold pickguard - tacky.

I can dial in the sound pretty much, but it doesn't sound the same after being recorded for some reason. I'm not messing with the EQ on the mixing board either; it's all flat during recording. 🤷 Weird...

For those who say they don't hear a difference, you are either using your phone speakers to listen or your ears are blown out. There is a clear difference. Custom is a good deal brighter and clearer with a thinner high end, jb is a bit more thick sounding with more of a rounded high end. custom sits better and cuts in a mix better when playing fly leads over rhythm as shown here and sounds better to me for rhythm playing in general. I think jb sounds better for leads but might have to be eq'd a little for the mix. Both great pickups but it's going to come down to the rest of your chain. If I were playing a jcm800 then jb for sure. A darker amp like Orange? I think the custom would be the winner in that scenario. Think with your ears AND mind.

With my eyes closed I can't tell when they switch pickups....

Been using a vox tonelab st because it's all I have at the moment but can't get a good bass tone through it for some reason. & Plugging directly into the mixer sounds worse. Would be nice to see your settings better so I could try it.

Perfect comparison. I have a Custom in my Explorer, a JB in my Les Paul, and I just put the Dave Mustaine Thrash Factors (basically a tighter/punchier JB) in my SG and those TF pickups are my favorite. Just incredible.

In my own experience, i think the more underated feature of the sh5 is his split position. Very balanced, a small volume drop, works well in hss config. Actualy i use more often the split than the full humbucker selection. Almost a p90 sound.

From experience the Duncan Custom has a distinctive upper midrange and high end (that isn't brittle at all). It expresses itself as an "airy" quality in the tone that can be described as very harmonically responsive in the transient sounds of your playing. By that I mean various overtones bloom from _nodal points_ along the string the longer it vibrates. When you pluck the strings in different places this pickup expresses those overtones in the pick attack itself giving it an almost flange like quality if you start dramatically shifting your hands position as you tremolo pick.. I have a 25.5" scale Rhoads. The bridge pickup cavity sits a little bit further from the Tunomatic bridge than this giving it slightly more gain and low end.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't like the JB on cleans. The clean sound is just too hi-fi to my taste, it lacks the hairiness :)

This is not a comparison video, but rather a demonstration of the absolute superiority of the JB/Jazz combo to the terrible PRS pickups. Generally, I'm a big fan of PRS stock pups, especially in their Core and S2 models. But what they've been putting in their SE line is a travesty. I had a PRS SE and I loaded it with a JB/Jazz combo and it sounded unreal.
